EMPRESS MATILDA makes a pleasing winning debut, and SPETSES goes one better than last time out to secure a Southwell double.

EMPRESS MATILDA got her racing career off to the perfect start at Southwell this evening, travelling well throughout the 7f contest and responding gamely in the closing stages to run on for a 2½l success under Jack Mitchell. The two-year-old Al Kazeem filly is the first foal out of Daahyeh, who was herself a high-class juvenile for Varian Stable back in 2019.

Congratulations to Mrs Victoria Machen and connections.

Just a short while later and it was SPETSES' turn in the Southwell winners enclosure. The three-year-old Get Stormy colt made a pleasing debut earlier this month when coming 2nd at Newcastle, and we were delighted to see him build on that performance and go one better today. SPETSES jumped out prominently and took up the lead within the first furlong. From that point on, it never looked in doubt and he cruised home under Jack Mitchell for a facile 6½l victory.

Congratulations to owner/breeders Flaxman Stables Ireland Ltd.
